How old is the universe? Evolutionary scientists talk about how radiometric dating methods prove the universe and the earth are billions of years old. Let’s look at all the methods scientists could use. There are well over 100 methods available! There are thousands of scientists who prefer other methods that offer younger ages for our world and universe.
Those few methods—out of over 100—that evolutionists prefer are not very exact. Sometimes evolutionists will actually get a negative age for something using one of their preferred methods. In other words, the same method that shows that some object is a billion years old may show that some other object doesn’t even exist yet!
The fact is, more dating methods prove, just as scientifically, that the world is less than 500 years old than prove it is more than a billion years old. Of over 100 methods we know of— giving results of anywhere from 100 years to billions of years— 15% of all methods give a date of between 6,000 and 10,000 years for the age of the universe. That is a very powerful statistical argument for a young creation!
We Christians should not allow evolutionists to intimidate us with scientific mumbo-jumbo. Our faith is in the Bible that God has given us. Those who promote evolution have their faith in their own reasoning abilities. The origins debate is religious. The religion revealed by God is challenging, head-to-head, another religion. ‘Let’s say that you drop by a friend’s house, and you find her at one end of the kitchen with a sponge mop in her hands. Three-quarters of the kitchen floor is wet. That picture provides you with a type of clock. You know that she has been mopping the kitchen floor for awhile and is nearly done.
It’s much the same in space. There is a great deal of dust in between the Earth, the moon, all the other planets, and the sun. However, you won’t need to send your friend with the mop to clean it up because the sun and planets slowly sweep this dust from space. If you have ever seen a meteor or “shooting star” streak through the night sky, the bright trail was probably made by a particle no larger than a grain of sand. The Earth was doing its part in the solar system’s ongoing janitorial work. Yes, some of this space dust actually ends up in our homes!
Unlike what often seems to be true in our homes, there is a limited supply of dust in space. It is, however, still a huge amount. Like your friend’s kitchen floor, we might get an idea of how long the Earth, the sun and the other planets have been around by finding out how much of that dust has already been cleaned up. According to scientists’ own figures, our Earth and the rest of the solar system could not have been around more than 10,000 years!
This is such a mystery to scientists who believe that things are billions of years old that some have even suggested that this dust doesn’t follow the laws of physics. The study of the universe and its forces is called cosmology. The night sky is a breathtaking vision to anyone who views it far away from city lights. As cosmologists look into space, they see mysteries that cannot be explained. These mysteries can literally cause supercomputers to have nervous breakdowns from pondering imponderables. One would think that the cosmologist would be more likely than most to recognize the genius of God.
Researchers recently gave a supercomputer the task of calculating the results of gravitational collapse of a huge collection of matter in space. The result was what scientists call an “infinity.” This means that the answer to the mathematical problem is so complex that no scientist can calculate it. Even the most powerful computer in the world is not up to the task! The team that arrived at the incomprehensible answer admits that modern science really knows very little about the nature of the cosmos.
Cosmologists know that the universe is not an accident. They expect the universe to have laws and make sense. As they learn more about the universe, they are gaining an even greater appreciation for the Mind from which the universe has come. Big Bang astrophysicists are having a bit of a Big Bang bother over trying to work out whether or not the universe is flat. There are some astrophysicists who claim the universe is flat, and others who claim the universe is round. According to Big Bang scientists, space has more dimensions than we can envisage. Even the “simplest” analogy they can make suggests that the universe is on the surface of a four-dimensional sphere, expanding into that fourth dimension. If one could send a rocket far enough in a straight line in any direction, then it would eventually come back on itself – if the universe is round. Yet, other observational evidence suggests that universe is flat – that if a rocket sets off in one direction, it would never return.
A recent New Scientist article made some explanations about these disagreements, and this highlighted why the mysteries arise. For example, one observation concerns “lensing”, where light is bent by gravitational fields of stars and planets. The article explains: “That is because the extra lensing implies the presence of extra dark matter, which would pull the universe into a finite sphere instead of a flat sheet.” But this assumes the existence of dark matter. As we have discussed in previous Creation Moments, dark matter is really a “fiddle factor”, designed to help Big Bang sums work.
