‘Australians may be encouraged to get a fifth Covid shot as winter approaches, federal Health Minister Mark Butler said this week.
Butler told the ABC’s 7.30 program that the government was waiting on health advice regarding the additional booster shots for the general population.
He said the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation was due to provide a recommendation soon.
ATAGI recommended in November against people getting a fifth Covid vaccine because evidence from Singapore showed a fifth shot had only a “trivial” effect on case numbers.
Currently only adults with a severely compromised immune system are eligible for the shot.
Butler said although Covid case numbers had fallen to around 6500 per day this month, compared to 15,000 per day in December, it was important Australians started to prepare now for winter.

‘We have learned from the first sets of documents released by Pfizer to the public on the Pfizer-BioNTech (COMIRNATY) vaccine that in the first 90 days of public use, the sponsor received reports on 1,223 deaths and did not disclose this to the public or pull the product off the market in a voluntary recall which is the only responsible action for this type of unexpected death rate.1
To make matters worse, Pfizer categorized 1,291 unique adverse events of special interest with an entire range of diseases that fall into the categories of neurological, cardiovascular, immunologic, and hematologic.2
Additional concerning areas include fetal loss in ill-advised conceiving or childbearing women to take one of the vaccines and the emergence of either de novo or accelerated cancers.3 For all of these reasons, people are protesting in large numbers to stop the vaccine programs whilst CEOs are pushing the fourth shot. The tension could not be any greater.

‘Chalk up another victory for America’s innovative pharmaceutical sector in the battle against Covid-19. An FDA analysis has found that Johnson and Johnson’s vaccine is both safe and effective, setting up a likely emergency-use authorization for the product. This would add a third vaccine to the American market, following the introduction of vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna in December. The J&J vaccine will not only add much needed supply but also offer some significant advantages over the other two shots.
The top-line number for the J&J vaccine—67 percent effectiveness in decreasing moderate to severe Covid-19 illness—might seem to suggest that it is inferior to the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, which boast more than 90 percent effectiveness. But the vaccine trials are not directly comparable. The Pfizer and Moderna trials were conducted earlier, when fewer and probably less dangerous virus variants were extant. More importantly, J&J’s vaccine is very effective at preventing severe illness: 77 percent effective in reducing cases occurring 14 days after vaccination and 85 percent for cases 28 days after vaccination. Notably, no deaths or hospitalizations occurred among the trial’s vaccine recipients. As with the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, side effects were mostly minor and brief.
The J&J vaccine also offers important advantages. First, it is a single dose rather than the currently required two doses for Pfizer and Moderna. This makes it far more likely people will sign up for it, since a single dose is less of a time commitment and inconvenience than a two-dose regimen.
