This is where “Christianity” is today! ‘Tennessee megachurch pastor Tavner Smith returned to the pulpit Sunday—six weeks after allegations surfaced that Smith had engaged in an adulterous affair and eight of his staff quit.‘https://julieroys.com/tn-pastor-returns-pulpit-absence-alleged-adultery/?mc_cid=aed4266b85&mc_eid=b13d34ad49
Acts 20:28 Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood. 29 For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock.
‘A pastor and Christian radio host in central Illinois has been arrested on charges of grooming a minor, after sending a teen girl “sexually inappropriate” messages online, local authorities say.
Joseph “Joey” Krol, 36, sent sexually explicit material to the Snapchat account of a 15-year-old girl and requested nude photos of her, according to a sworn affidavit from the Macon County Sheriff’s Office. Reportedly, Krol knew the girl and her family through Galilee Baptist Church in Decatur, Illinois, where Krol has served as senior pastor since 2016.
What Krol didn’t know is that the girl’s family, located in nearby Oreana, had contacted local authorities. They captured the social media interaction as part of an undercover investigation, stated Sgt. Roger Pope per a local news report.
“(She) allowed me to take over her Snapchat account and act as her while conversing with Krol,” said Sgt. Pope in the affidavit. “During our conversations, Krol requested photos of (the girl) in her underwear.” His explicit dialogue with the minor included asking if “her fantasies” include an “interest in older men.”
Days later, officers knocked on the front door of Krol’s residence in Dawson. Through a window they observed Krol grabbing his phone and running a “factory reset” on the device. But they had already obtained the evidence.
Krol was booked at the county jail on October 15 and charged with the Class 4 felony charge of grooming. The offense is defined as attempting to seduce, solicit, lure, or entice a child to commit a sex act.
Krol’s criminal activity of grooming reportedly began during his five-year tenure at Galilee Baptist, a Southern Baptist church in rural Decatur. In July, Krol was hired as senior pastor at another Southern Baptist church—Rochester First Baptist Church, located in neighboring Sangamon County.
Krol also worked as operations manager and an on-air host for Christian radio station WLUJ—a Moody Radio affiliate, which is owned by Good News Radio. Krol is no longer listed as an employee on the station’s website, and it is unclear when his employment there ended. The Roys Report reached out to the station but did not hear back.
Rochester Baptist posted a statement online. “We as a church are grieved to learn of this allegation involving Dr. Krol,” the church said. “Because we take this seriously, we have immediately suspended Dr. Krol from all responsibilities. We have great concern and are in prayer for all affected by the situation and will cooperate with any law enforcement investigation.”
Similarly, the elders of Galilee Baptist issued a statement, saying: “We are eager to minister to all involved in this situation and will be offering professional counseling services to the victim of the alleged incident.”
Krol and his wife, Aubrey Krol, have two children, according to Krol’s 2019 bio at WLUJ. Aubrey Krol works for the Illinois State Baptist Association (IBSA), which is affiliated with the Southern Baptist Convention.
Lisa Misner, public policy manager at IBSA, responded to a request for comment. “The local churches affected by this case are cooperating with law enforcement and ministering to their congregations and to those involved in the case,” she stated.
“As a network of autonomous churches, IBSA continues to offer resources to help churches protect vulnerable people and to minister in cases of sexual abuse.”
The Southern Baptist Convention has been rocked by allegations of clergy sex abuse and cover-up. On June 15, Southern Baptist messengers from across the nation adopted a strategic initiative known as Vision 2025 during the SBC Convention in Nashville. The sixth strategic action calls the convention to “prayerfully endeavor to eliminate all incidents of sexual abuse.”
Krol remains in custody at Macon County Jail, with bail set at $75,000.’https://julieroys.com/illinois-pastor-krol-charged-grooming-teen-girl/?mc_cid=8f9edb6a60&mc_eid=b13d34ad49
Some of these religious elites have the gall, do they not?
‘Jerry Falwell, Jr. promoted the Gospel openly and has mocked it privately. He is mocking it again publicly by suing the institution his father founded. Jerry Jr. led Liberty University in a laudable way at a million-dollar annual salary while the national average for university presidents is $512,987.00. He has been getting a million each year and has a 10 million dollar retirement package, yet he is suing the school. Jerry is like the dummy that made soup out of the goose that laid golden eggs. Now he is whining about his treatment and using the court to add additional golden eggs to his basket.
Jerry has sued Liberty University for defamation and breach of contract because university officials allegedly damaged his reputation, forcing him to resign. Wow, that’s like a skunk accusing a rabbit of having bad breath. Some of the accusations against him may never be authenticated, but there is substantial evidence of their wrongdoing. The suit is a ploy to refurbish his tarnished image, but the rust and blemish are irrevocable.
In other words, his self-inflicted wound was terminal.
In his complaint filed in the Virginia Circuit Court in Lynchburg, Falwell also claims that university officials accepted what Falwell alleges are false claims about his involvement in an extramarital affair between his wife and a former business partner without investigating the matter.
According to the Associated Press, “This action seeks redress for the damage Liberty has caused to the reputation of Mr. Falwell and his family.” Of course, that is lawyer-speak; surely, Jerry has more brainpower than that. Even a flickering one candlepower brain understands that Jerry and his wife are the culprits even if acknowledging that the university officials didn’t do everything right.
I believe the Board of Trustees, which includes five friends of mine of 40 years, was very slow on taking charge and holding Jerry’s feet to the fire. That includes the new president of the school Dr. Jerry Prevo, one of the most gracious and kind men I know.
By taking the initiative, Jerry thinks it will convince the non-thinkers to say, “Well, maybe Jerry and Becki are not fornicators, voyeurs, liars, and hypocrites after all.” After all, would guilty people drag others into court, thereby bringing attention to themselves again, again, and again? Sure, they would. All you need is some money, unprincipled lawyers, and much chutzpa. Evidently, Jerry and Becki have what’s needed.
The Associated Press reported that the lawsuit alleges, “Liberty’s actions are antithetical to the teachings of Christ.” Jerry doesn’t seem to admit that his kettle is black, very black. Yet, the kettle keeps calling the pot black. The God-haters inside and outside Christianity look for opportunities to throw stones at any professing Christian, and Jerry’s maneuverings have given everyone reasons to throw stones at him, and by extension, at all Christian entities.
Forget what accusations against Jerry that may never be proved; consider what we know.
We know Jerry used the university plane for personal use. That is illegal. He was fiduciary of a nonprofit entity, not the Sultan of Morocco. He could afford a first-class ticket to Miami, but he would have to rub shoulders with the hoi polloi; therefore, he took advantage of his position.
We know that numerous Falwell family members are on the university payroll, and that suggests either nepotism or the family has many highly talented people. No doubt, some are qualified and would be hired if their last names were Smith or Jones.
Jerry, with his limited knowledge and no educational experience, would not have been president of Liberty if his name were Jerry Jones.
We know Jerry and various family members partied, danced, and drank at a Florida nightclub. Falwell first denied being there and then admitted he had. His daddy would have been aghast, angered, and ashamed.
We know that Jerry helped his son Trey, a Liberty vice-president, finance a Miami hostel known for being “gay-friendly.” I hope no one in Heaven has told Jerry Sr. that fact.
We know that Becki had a yearlong affair with a young pool worker in Miami after her successful seduction of him. Both the Falwells admitted that allegation; however, Jerry still denies he watched them from time to time. He admitted he might be a fornicator and drunk and a cuckold, but not a voyeur.
According to Politico, Becki seduced and provided oral sex on a student who was in the band with her son, Trey, during an all-night stay at Falwell’s home. The media reported a close friend of the Falwell’s and a neighbor confirmed that Becki had told her about her affair with the student.
It seems Becki is not only a Jezebel with major character deficiencies; she is also stupid.
We’ve seen, as has the world, a photo of Jerry on a boat with a young woman with both their pants partly unzipped and him holding a glass of “black water,” according to Jerry. Falwell captioned the post, “More vacation shots. Lots of good friends visited us on the yacht. I promise that’s just black water in my glass. It was a prop only.” He was incredibly stupid or immature to permit such a photo. Then to send it to others is beyond the pale.
We now know that it was probably booze since Becki called 911 after he fell at home in a drunken stupor.
The New York Post reported that Jerry’s daughter-in-law and a female Liberty student were using the family’s guesthouse for cooking a meal. Falwell said that the friend pulled up her own skirt, as a joke, while she was cooking. The daughter-in-law was video recording the girl and sent screenshots around, according to Falwell. “She had on, I don’t know how to say this, granny panties,” he said, saying the image “wasn’t sexual.” Well, I may be a little dense or naïve, but when a woman lifts her dress to reveal her underwear, that is sexual. Falwell said he sent the screenshot to several people because he thought it was funny!
I knew Jerry Sr. since the 1960s, and he was known for his jokes, often on himself and sometimes very involved, but the son didn’t get his father’s sense of comedy or character or conscience.
On November 1, Politico published another scandal about Jerry and Becki playing a secret game called “Would you rather.” According to a former student, the Falwells walked through the university campus and eyeballed different students discussing what it would be like to have sex with them.
It is incredible the Falwells could be so carnal-minded, but then to tell others of their not so secret “game” indicates dwindling and flickering intellectual candlepower and spiritual blindness.
These people are worldly, wild, and weird people. Evangelicals and Fundamentalists are discussing Jerry and Becki’s failures (which all of us have in varying degrees), but I have doubts as to their personal salvation. I almost never make that judgment, and all Christians fail (sin) from time to time, but we don’t live in a vile lifestyle for months and years without repentance or without even awareness.
There is a big difference between committing adultery and repenting and living in adultery for years without repenting.
Jerry sued the university because they hurt his reputation, but it appears to anyone, blind in one eye and cataract-laden in the other, that the Falwells did it to themselves.
It appears that Jerry has added to his sins of carelessness, carnality, drunkenness, nepotism, arrogance, and greed, the sin of taking other Christians to court. Most non-Christians won’t be aware of this, but Christians are not to take other Christians to court but settle all disputes within the church walls. Christians have honest disagreements and misunderstandings that require a just settlement since we are not perfect, just born again. Paul said that Christians will judge angels, so we should be able to solve our human problems.
Falwell charged the university officials had defamed him multiple times, such as in an announcement that there had been a “lack of spiritual leadership” at the school. No sane, honest person could say Falwell had given any spiritual leadership to the school. In that, he was a total failure. While enforcing the rules on students, faculty, and workers, he flaunted the most basic Christian principles.
Liberty did not defame Falwell, and he is trying to get in court what the court of public opinion can not give him. If I ever saw a hard sell, that is one. But anything can happen in court.
However, Jerry will appear before another Court where truth, fairness, justice always reign, and the sentence is always just. I don’t know what will happen with Jerry’s suit, but I know in Heaven, his name, influence, money, and friends will have no standing.
His claim of defamation is frivolous, faulty, fanciful, and false. The public’s assessment of him as a hypocrite is sadly true, and hypocrites must exercise remorse, repentance, and return to their first love.
My relationship with Jerry Sr. revealed a man of character, but the carnality, crassness, and compromises of his eldest son reflect badly on his legacy.
So sad. Such a tragedy.’http://donboys.cstnews.com/jerry-falwell-drags-liberty-university-into-court

‘Brian Houston, global senior pastor of the international Hillsong Church, announced today that an independent investigator will review the “inner workings” of Hillsong’s New York City branch after the firing of its lead pastor, Carl Lentz, on Nov. 4.
“We need a solid foundation for a fresh start and new beginning,” Houston said in a tweet, adding, “The best is yet to come.”
We are launching an independent investigation into the inner workings of Hillsong NYC/ East Coast. We need a solid foundation for a fresh start and new beginning. The best is yet to come.
— Brian Houston (@BrianCHouston) November 12, 2020
On Nov. 4, Houston emailed staff and members of Hillsong East Coast about Lentz’s termination. His email, which was obtained by The Roys Report, cited “leadership issues and breaches of trust, plus a recent revelation of moral failures” for Lentz’s firing but did not reveal more details, saying to do so “would not be appropriate.” He later posted a similar statement on the church’s website.
The following day, Lentz, who founded the New York Hillsong location in 2010 with Houston’s son Joel, admitted in an Instagram post that he’d been “unfaithful to my wife.”
Lentz’s confession was accompanied by a photo of Lentz with his wife and three children. “I now begin a journey of rebuilding trust with my wife, Laura and my children and taking real time to work on and heal my own life and seek out the help that I need,” Lentz wrote.
According to Boz Tchividjian, a former prosecutor and founder of GRACE, an organization that works with churches to investigate abuse, he and an unnamed source reported sexual transgressions to Hillsong in 2017, but were rebuffed. “There have been many sexual transgressions at Hillsong NYC,” Tchividjian said. “We tried to address them in 2017 and we were told that we were spreading gossip.’”
Tchividjian added, “This is a common & effective method leaders use to shame victims into silence in order to protect offenders & institutional reputations.”
Brian Houston and his wife Bobbie founded the original Hillsong Church in 1983 in the suburbs of Sydney, Australia. It now has locations in 28 countries around the world and, pre-pandemic, saw an average 150,000 attenders each week, according to its website.
The various global churches all report to Houston and a board of male elders.
Relatively unknown before taking the helm of Hillsong NYC, Lentz became a media darling for his hipster clothes, tattooed arms and his celebrity congregants, including Justin Bieber and his wife, Hailey Baldwin Bieber, as well as the Jenner sisters. He was one of a number of pastors GQ Magazine has described as “hypepriests” who lead churches frequented by celebrities.
In answer to Lentz’s Instagram post, Esther Houston, Joel Houston’s wife, implied that, despite his admission, Lentz had not stopped the affair that led to his dismissal.
“Amazing to see all the support being poured out for this despicable ongoing behavior,” she said in the comment. “Listen. I’m not gonna play this game. I fully denounce this and will make no excuses for it. You’ve been dealt a good hand, and you played it wrong.”
The British tabloid The Sun has reported that Lentz posed as a sports agent when he met a 34-year old designer, who identified herself only as Ranin, in a Brooklyn, New York, park. Ranin told The Sun she had been having an affair with the pastor for the past five months.
Ranin said after a few dates, she began to suspect he was married and asked. At that point, he admitted he had three children and had been married for 17 years. She later used his phone number to find out his last name and, at that point, discovered he was a pastor.
“My mind was blown,” she told the tabloid.
Ranin said Lentz told her that when he first saw her, “God told him to tell me that I need to know my worth and there’s something special about me … whatever whatever.”
According to Ranin, the two broke up last week. She said Lentz’s wife discovered their text messages on his computer at the Hillsong offices, with several of his coworkers there.
Lentz met his wife, Laura, a family friend of the Houston’s, in Australia when he attended Hillsong’s training program, Hillsong College. It is unclear whether she will remain in her position at Hillsong NYC, though some reports have said that she has also been let go.
In a brief appearance at Hillsong NYC’s Sunday streaming service, Brian Houston expressed gratitude for the team of leaders at the Manhattan church and said they were not only supportive of the decisions made, “but were part of the process.”
Houston also noted that during transitions, “It’s always a time where there’s speculation, rumor and gossip when change is made, and especially when radical change is made.”
“There’s great days ahead,” Houston assured the church. “We will continue to stay in touch when it comes to the long-term leadership of Hillsong East Coast.”
Neither Hillsong NYC nor Hillsong Global immediately responded to request for comment.’https://julieroys.com/hillsong-investigation-lentzs-firing/?mc_cid=17ba77ef58&mc_eid=b13d34ad49
Is this for real? ‘Today former Southern Baptist Convention President Frank Page spoke with the FBC Jax Watchdog in an exclusive interview, revealing the details of his “inappropriate relationship in the recent past” that caused him to resign from the SBC Executive Committee.
“It is with deep regret that I let my fellow pastors and Southern Baptists know that I have had a morally inappropriate relationship over the past several months,”, said Page. “The Lord has shown me recently that this moral failing requires my repentance and departure from full-time ministry.”
When asked by the FBC Jax Watchdog for the details of the nature of the relationship, Page was at first hesitant and obviously embarrassed. Finally he did explain what happened.
Page explained that the relationship was not with a woman, but was actually with two men who are fellow “men of God”.
“In December, I committed the sin of befriending disgraced pastor Ergun Caner, and I even stooped so low as to share a pulpit with him at a youth camp meeting. Even knowing that Caner lied for over 10 years about being raised in Turkey and raised to ‘do that which was done on 11 September’, I still stood on the same stage as Ergun. This led to a further moral failing of shaking hands with Ravi Zaccharias at a pastor’s conference, knowing he is still unrepentant for his online relationship with a married woman.”
Page continued that these moral failings even led to a month-long bout with depression that caused him to watch the godless movies “Year One” and “Sausage Party”.
“I am committed to making things right with my family and fellow Southern Baptists”, said Page.’ http://fbcjaxwatchdog.blogspot.com.au/2018/04/frank-page-reveals-details-of-his.html
Now, wait a minute. If every preacher stepped down because they shared the pulpit with a lying preacher or shook hands with another preacher at a pastor’s conference that was accused of infidelity or other sins there wouldn’t be too many men still in the ministry!
Page’s explanation just doesn’t make sense!
As a conservative, it really gets me hot under the collar when a self-identifying conservative politician does stupid or shall we just call it sin! Now, Prime Minister Turnbull is a Labor politician in the Liberal camp. Turnbull was for same-sex marriage, he believes in climate change and he wants to make Australia a Republic. When Turnbull does and says stupid I can understand because he is stupid when it comes to these and some other issues.
However, recently a conservative National Party person did a stupid (sin) by committing adultery with one of his staff members. Not only that, he has now left his wife and children to move in with the adulteress who is expecting their baby this April. This person is the Deputy Prime Minister and leader of the National Party, Barnaby Joyce. In the past this person has said:
“I’m a strong Catholic. I’m anti-abortion…and I’m going to be standing up for conservative family values.” The Age 15th Apr, 2005
“On 16th August, 2005, he gave his Maiden Speech in the Senate and began, “Thank you, Mr President. Firstly, I would like to acknowledge my parents who brought me into this world, my wife…and children…who support me in this world, and my God who oversees all and who hopefully I will meet in the next.” Hansard, Senate Maiden Speech
When a Labor politician lies and does stupid I can understand it because they are a Labor thinking left-leaning socialist and are stupid. However, note three words Joyce said in the first quote; “conservative family values”. He may have been then in word but certainly not in heart! As the Lord Jesus said “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders” Mark 7:21.
Joyce in his maiden speech for the Senate said: “my God” who he “hopefully” would meet someday. Well, firstly, Joyce can be sure he will meet God one day but perhaps not the way he thinks; Revelation 21:8 But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.
Barnaby Joyce is a liar and whoremonger of whom God says will have their part in the lake of fire. Barnaby Joyce needs to do some serious thinking concerning God, Jesus Christ, sin, Heaven, Hell and eternity. John the Apostle wrote in John 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.
Has Joyce done something many other politicians have not done? Probably not. Sadly, what many if not most of the Labor side are on about is not the adultery but the job transfer and salary that was given this staff member. What does that tell us about those politicians?
Barnaby Joyce needs to step down from being Deputy Prime Minister and allow someone who does truly hold to “conservative family values” have the job. One’s private life does affect their public life!
Are all Bibles the same? Does it really make any difference what English Bible you use? The answer to question one is; if they are different they are not the same. The answer to question two is; do you want a Bible with all that God spoke or only what man thinks God spoke?
Dr. Boys wrote ‘Recently, a highly trained and very successful New Jersey pastor announced that he would be preaching the following week in his Gospel of John series but would not deal with John 7:53-8:11–the woman taken in adultery who was forgiven by Christ. The pastor, very close to me, wrote, “we conclude without doubt that John 7:53-8:11 was not part of the gospel of John as the Apostle wrote it.” I disagree. There is plenty of doubt.
I believe that pastor, far more qualified than I, was wrong. In a discussion with him or other scholars about biblical manuscripts, I would feel like a mule at the Kentucky Derby. But he is still wrong. In fact, he has to be wrong because God promised to preserve His Word. If He did not, then the Bible is untrue, unreliable, and unnecessary.
Even though that pastor is my very special first grandchild (and the father of four precious great grandchildren), he is still wrong! Of course, he knows my position on this issue.
He also suggested that pastors need to know the biblical languages in order to provide correct instructions to church members; however, if pastors know those languages, they must use the correct manuscripts and reject the corrupt ones. But his suggestion smacks of Roman Catholics who made it illegal for members to keep a copy of the Bible in their vernacular. The Catholics were to come to the priest for a “correct” interpretation. One reason God gave us the Bible in our language was so we could all become Bereans who “searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” While it is good to know the original languages, it is not a requirement to be an effective pastor.
Some pertinent questions about the Bible’s reliability will be helpful: Could a sovereign, all-powerful God lead and direct men to write a perfect book? Of course, the question demands a positive answer. Question two: Could a sovereign, all-powerful God, after directing men to write a perfect Bible, then keep scribes and translators from error? Again, the answer must be positive. Third question: Why would a sovereign, all-powerful God direct men to produce a perfect Bible to give mankind directions for life and death, and not preserve its perfection?
Pastors who take the modern approach tell us that the Bible is perfect in the “originals” but they seldom tell their audience that no one has seen the “originals” in 2000 years! Why would God give man the “originals” for a few years and leave following generations with an imperfect book? Why give the human race a perfect book then take it from us?
The disputed passage belongs in the Bible; if the Bible is not reliable in John 7 and 8, it is not reliable in John 3 on which personal salvation rests. The Bible is the Words of the Living God which will stand forever. If our critics are correct and we do not have an available, accurate, and authoritative Word then where on the face of the earth can we find His will?
Admittedly, the issue is one that good, great, and godly scholars have debated for centuries. One of the earliest objections to the John passage is that Christ seems to be abrogating the Old Testament law requiring death for adultery. Ancient Jews were fearful that Christ’s leniency might give succor to their wives about adultery! Ambrose (died 420) mentioned this in a sermon on David and Bathsheba condemning those who were critical of Christ and those who excised the passage. So the passage was in the Bibles of the early 400s.
Many other Latin Fathers including John Chrysostom and Augustine of Hippo all speak of the passage as being canonical! Augustine (died 430) said some scribes removed the passage because it might seem that Christ was nonchalant about adultery, but Augustine did not advocate removing it from Scripture.
Jerome (died 420), who translated the Latin Vulgate, agreed the passage was legitimate and left it in his translation. Furthermore, he says that the disputed passage was found in “many Greek and Latin manuscripts” in Rome and the Latin West, late in the 4th century.
However, an overzealous scribe decided it would be best to remove the passage rather than cause concern and possibly encourage loose living with scriptural justification! Such scribes were guilty of taking away from the Word of God which is dangerous.
The disputed passage is included in the 1611 KJV, in the 1587 Geneva Bible, 1568 Bishop’s Bible, 1539 Great Bible, 1537 Matthew’s Bible, 1535 Coverdale Bible, 1526 Tyndale Bible, and 1382 Wycliffe Bible. Modern Bibles omit it, footnote it, or bracket it so that readers get the message: it is not reliable. It is fake news, a false story by fallible writers.
All liberals and many Evangelicals teach that the John passage should not be in the Bible, yet the new translations keep putting it in the Bible! The RSV even took it out causing a furor, then replaced it in a later edition to make people happy and to continue selling Bibles! (Is it cynical to suggest that modern translations are all about money?) Modern translators know that removing that famous story would precipitate rebellion, revolution, and ruin in their Bible market. So they knowingly use a passage that practically all their liberal experts agree should not be in the Bible! If a passage does not belong in the Bible (according to their research and convictions), they should do the principled thing, but modern translators have taken a stand like a crippled chicken. They place the disputed passage in their translations because of cash, cowardice, and convenience.
There are some reputable scholars who agree with my grandson about whether or not the passage belongs in John’s Gospel. Among them are: Bruce Metzger, Leon Morris, Merrill Tenney, D. A. Carson, Ed Blum, Colin Kruse, John Piper, R. C. Lenski, Alfred Edersheim, G. Campbell Morgan, and A. T. Robertson.
Some in the above camp consider the defense of the passage and defense of the KJV a “cancerous sore,” “cultic,” “near cultic,” and “deplorable.” Such “scholars” are, in my opinion, “deplorable.”
Other scholars accept the passage as scriptural: Dean John William Burgon, Zane Hodges, D. A. Waite, David Otis Fuller, Edward F. Hills, A. W. Pink, R. C. Sproul, John MacArthur, James Boice, J. C. Ryle, and John Calvin. So, there are good, highly qualified men on both sides of this issue.
Evidently, there is some doubt. It is not as clear as the critics say.
According to the number of manuscripts that have and don’t the passage, 1,495 Greek manuscripts include the John passage or part of it, and 267 do not include it. Moreover, the 267 manuscripts are very early. Most people are impressed with the “earliest” manuscripts but valid, original manuscripts were in the hands of early church fathers who quoted from them from A.D. 150 forward! They quoted, for example, from the last twelve verses of Mark so how could they quote from manuscripts they didn’t hold in their hands? Manuscript date is part of the equation, but it is non-determinative. Manuscripts should be accepted unless proved defective.
Even Aristotle’s dictum supports that approach. He said, “the benefit of the doubt is to be given to the document itself, not arrogated by the critic to himself.” However, modern translators think they are more trustworthy than the document in question, but I wouldn’t trust them to walk my dog!
The fathers of modern Bible translations, Brooke Foss Westcott (1825-1903) and Fenton John Anthony Hort (1828-1892) declared, “The earliest and most reliable manuscripts and other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53-8:11.” These so-called earliest and most reliable manuscripts were polluted at an early age by the Gnostics whose headquarters were in Alexandria, Egypt–the same city where the Vatican manuscript arose. When the Gnostics didn’t agree with some doctrine or passage, they either subtracted it, or changed it in some way to fit their heretical theology. Hence the production of the Vatican and Sinai manuscripts.
Westcott and Hort, like many liberals, gush over the “earliest” and “most reliable” manuscripts but the earliest are not always the most reliable. Both men were unbelieving Anglican priests.
It should also be remembered that the main reason there are so many older manuscripts extant is because they were avoided by the early church leaders because the documents were corrupt. They didn’t get worn out and thus survived to be found and used to confuse Christians today.
Moreover, the “earliest” and “most reliable” manuscripts are identified as Vaticanus and Sinaiticus from the fourth century. Westcott and Hort assumed that both manuscripts were far superior and since those manuscripts did not have the John passage, that was enough for them. However, traditional Greek manuscripts preceded the 4th century manuscripts of Vaticanus and Sinaiticus and were quoted by many church fathers such as Irenaeus who wrote from 150 A.D.! Since very early church fathers quoted from Mark 16:9-20 for example, then it is false to claim that the Vaticanus and Sinaiticus were the oldest known manuscripts.
But it gets even worse for proponents of modern translations. Dean John Burgon was a famous scholar and Bible defender (died 1888) and he declared that Vaticanus and Sinaiticus are among “the most corrupt copies in existence.” Older does not equal reliable.
According to Frederick Henry Ambrose Scrivener, the African Church corrupted the New Testament as far back as A.D. 150! He also declared of the Codex Sinaiticus (Aleph) from the 4th Century: “From the number of errors, one cannot affirm that it is very carefully written.”
Of the Codex Vaticanus (B) from the 4th Century, he declares that a marked feature is the great number of omissions and calculates that whole words or clauses are left out!
Not a good recommendation for the much vaunted Sinaiticus and Vaticanus–from a scholar recognized as an expert by both sides of the controversy.
Most readers do not know of this Bible disagreement in Fundamentalist and Evangelical ranks. Most religious leaders do not believe the KJV is totally reliable while many do. However, I have noticed for many years the tendency of both sides to demonize the other. Those critical of the KJV are often very arrogant and vicious in their opposition, even calling us “cultists.” They quickly slide by the fact that many of our persuasion hold degrees just as reputable as theirs.
And on the other side, some in our group give good ammunition to the other side by making irresponsible and ridiculous claims. Some claim the KJV is “better than the Greek”; others declare than the KJV must be used in preaching or a person cannot be born again! There are devoted dummies on both sides of the issue.
If a man tells me he sincerely wants to know about eternal things, I will send him to the King James Bible for the truth. I tell him that it is God’s instruction manual for mankind which was accurately translated into English from the reliable and preserved Hebrew and Greek texts and preserved by God therefore, is totally reliable.
All the modern versions are based on corrupt Vaticanus and Sinaiticus and the work of evolutionists Westcott and Hort, radical unbelievers. They were Anglican scholars who never missed a chance to denounce, deny, and denigrate the Bible; but they did not disprove it. According to Dr. Jack Moorman’s book on Bible manuscripts, Westcott and Hort’s Vatican and Sinai manuscripts of the New Testament contain more than 8,000 differences with the traditional text underlying the King James Bible!
I can’t think of anything more shattering than for congregations to be told that the Bible on their laps is full of mistakes, misquotes, and misinformation. It is not if it is the KJV.
All right, for sake of argument, I could be wrong. If I have placed too much confidence in the Word of God, I will discover that at the Judgment Seat of Christ. I suppose Christ will say, “Don, you were wrong about the KJV being totally reliable. You were too committed to my Word!” I believe He will correct my error but with a smile and nod.
After all, I have only convinced people to place too much reliance on the Word of God–not the worse sin to commit; however, those who burn incense to the corrupt modern translations are guilty of taking away from the Word of the living God who promised to preserve it forever!
If I am to be wrong, it will be in favor of the Word that He promised in Psalm 12:6-7, “The words of the LORD are pure words: …Thou shalt keep them, O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.” Either He did or He didn’t!
So, honest people will look at the issue and come down on the side that is most convincing; however, it takes character to change when one has gone on record for most of his or her life. It’s difficult to admit a mistake. Tolstoy expressed this when he wrote, “I know that most men…can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabrics of their lives.”
However, having a reliable Bible is not a simple issue but it is sublime. I’ve made my decision and if I’m wrong, Christ will correct me. Same with you!’ http://donboys.cstnews.com/does-the-bible-contain-fake-news-and-false-stories-by-fallible-writers
