‘Freddie Mercury posed the rhetorical question “Who wants to live forever?”, ending with the line “Who waits forever anyway?” But scientist and author David Sinclair claims to have discovered why we age and how we could undo that aging.
In his 2019 book, Lifespan: Why We Age and Why We Don’t Have To, Sinclair says that it is a family of proteins called sirtuins which cause us to age. These proteins ought to repair the DNA, but they malfunction, leading to decay of the necessary portions of our DNA. Therefore, Sinclair claims that in the future it might be possible to reverse this aging process.
The Bible has an entirely different account of why we age. It is entirely possible that Sinclair could be right over the chemical mechanism for aging, but that is not why we age. God gave Adam, and therefore Eve as well, a commandment not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, and told them that breaking that command would start the process of death. So aging and death are caused by sin. Aging is actually a mercy from God. Immortality, while possessing sin, with all its ramifications, would be a dreadful ordeal – a nightmare scenario. Now, ‘After a marathon debate that ran all of Thursday and ended at nearly midnight, the bill to legalise voluntary assisted dying has failed to pass the New South Wales’ Upper House by a single vote.
With 19 voting in support but 20 against, the result came down to the wire.
MPs were given a conscience vote on the legislation, introduced by Nationals MP Trevor Khan, which would allow terminally ill patients over the age of 25 to end their own lives with the help of doctors.
Mr Khan said last night he was “obviously disappointed” with the vote but pledged to keep pushing for the legislation.
“We had what I think is a reasonable expectation that we’d just get over the line [but] obviously we fell short by one,” he said.
“[But] we’ll continue to talk with the stakeholders, and work out a timing and a campaign.
“It’s clear that there’s a lot of community support for this. It really needs that campaign to continue and we’ll get over the line in due course.

‘Why does the death lobby get away with promoting suicide?
The World Health Organisation published a resource for media professionals with protocols for responsible reporting of suicide deaths to prevent suicide and suicide contagion. The quick reference in the WHO media guidelines for preventing suicide states:
- Provide accurate information about where to seek help
- Educate the public about the facts of suicide and suicide prevention, without spreading myths Report stories of how to cope with life stressors or suicidal thoughts, and how to get help
- Apply caution when reporting celebrity suicides
- Apply caution when interviewing bereaved family or friends
- Recognize that media professionals themselves may be affected by stories about suicide
- Do not place stories about suicide prominently and do not unduly repeat such stories
- Do not use language which sensationalizes or normalizes suicide, or presents it as a constructive solution to problems
- Do not explicitly describe the method used
- Do not provide details about the site/location
- Do not use sensational headlines
- Do not use photographs, video footage or social media links
Data shows where euthanasia or assisted suicide have been legalised the suicide rates increase.
