‘More facts are coming to light about how privately-owned giants and de-facto digital public squares with billions of users cooperate with the US government – this time in a court document that Forbes writes got accidentally unsealed.
The document is what’s known as a “keyword warrant” – only the third that has surfaced so far publicly, though their number is feared to be higher than expected – and it shows that federal government had secretly ordered Google to identify anyone who searched a name, address, or telephone number, in a 2019 Wisconsin case of a missing minor.
In order to find the suspects in the presumed kidnapping and sexual abuse of the minor, those investigating the case decided to ask Google to turn over data on every person who happened to search the girl’s name, her mother’s name (in two different spellings), or their address. The data requested by the authorities included access to Google users’ accounts, CookieIDs, and their IP addresses, and in all covered Google searches performed during 16 days of one year.
In a sea of warrants asking data from Big Tech and their social media, the keyword searches, along with the geofence ones are considered to be among the most worrying when it comes to their potential to implicate perfectly innocent people, thanks to the “dragnet” approach.
Namely, these two types of warrants are not asking for data from suspects investigators have already identified; instead, they are hoping to come across them, and don’t care if everyone accidentally finding themselves within a physical perimeter or using a keyword in their search that has nothing to do with a crime might have their data given to government agencies.
In the Wisconsin case, Google cooperated and provided the requested information last year, but the document doesn’t show how many people got their Google accounts and IPs turned over.
Examples like this demonstrate that Google continues to work with the authorities even on warrants that are based on dubious legal grounds. All the same, the tech giant continues to defend its practices and promises that it is complying with the law while protecting user privacy.

Anyhow, Covid was perfect for Australia, which has a long and ugly history of trying to protect its borders at all costs. For most of its national existence it viewed itself pretty much explicitly as a white outpost against the Asian hordes.
Not all that much has changed. A few years ago the Australian government reopened offshore detention camps to discourage asylum seekers from floating on over. Conditions in the camps are… less than ideal.
So when Covid rolled in, the Australian government (and lots of Aussies) saw it as just another ugly export from China that needed to be beaten back at all costs. To its credit, Australia pushed hard for an independent investigation of the origins of Sars-Cov-2 last year (the Chinese pushed back, going so far as to call for a boycott of Australia’s delicious wine).
But Australia also went cray-cray – the technical term – for the fantasy of zero Covid. It effectively closed its borders not just to other countries but to its own citizens. For most of the last two years, they have had a hard time coming home – and an even harder time leaving.
But the insanity doesn’t stop at the border. Internally, Australia has repeatedly imposed harsh lockdowns. If even a single Covid case is found, cities and in some cases entire provinces effectively shut. Businesses and schools close and residents are required to stay inside except to buy food and exercise (though most exercise is prohibited):
The restrictions are police-enforced, and the Australians aren’t funning around.
This is not a pretend lockdown like the ones that even the bluest American states went with last year (you better stay home unless you really don’t want to!). This is the real deal. Note the use of license plate readers – and maybe even more tellingly, the word “fleeing” – in the headline below:
And don’t forget the internal travel restrictions or detention camps (oops, I mean Centres for National Resilence).
Australians – used to living in a free and democratic society – couldn’t possibly have accepted these rules, right?
Well. About that.
Until the last couple of months, the frogs were not just luxuriating in the pot but asking for a little more heat! Australians were so pleased to be Covid-free – for the entire first half of 2021, they had only one Covid death – that the majority happily tolerated these restrictions.
Yes, a few rabble-rousers complained, but even videos of police arresting people inside their homes or attacking (truly) peaceful protestors didn’t dent support for the creeping police state.
But in the last couple of months, and especially the last few days, the equilibrium has shifted. And – inevitably – the response of Australia’s fearless leaders has been to try even harder to stamp down unrest. As a result, the situation is increasingly unstable.

I do not personally know this man but came across his YouTube channel accidently. I am not sure what brought this police invasion into his home but he handled it, I think, pretty good. The police here in New South Wales have gone Nazi as far as I can see. What’s next for the average Joe that is just going about his daily life? ‘80% of New South Wales’ 8.166 million people remain under strict lockdown orders after Covid spread into the regions surrounding Sydney.
NSW Health Minister Brad Hazzard has been forced to hand over management of the Covid outbreak to Police Commissioner Mick Fuller after ongoing problems with lockdown compliance.
Hazzard was allegedly furious with the final decision.
Tensions arose when it became clear that some health workers were keeping the details of Covid rule-breakers secret to protect them from the police. Health workers ‘felt sorry’ for them, which is understandable given the onerous fines being handed out to an already desperate population, many of whom have lost their businesses and jobs during the pandemic.
Fuller, who is now that State Emergency Operations Controller, intends to crack down hard on people who fail to comply with health orders.
After an extraordinary crisis Cabinet meeting, police have walked away with unprecedented powers designed to close the gaps which have seen Sydney described as ‘leaking Covid like a sieve’. Fuller and Police Minister David Elliot are now in further talks to draw out a plan for the region.
Earlier in the week, Hazzard had instructed the government’s lawyers to look at ways to strengthen the health orders ‘as far as possible’, presumably to stop people travelling from lockdown regions.
“The rule is now that you shouldn’t just travel from one house to another just for the sake of moving to the other house. You should choose the property you’re living in and stay there,” said Hazzard.
Now, it is Commissioner Fuller who is working with an in-house legal team to draft additional powers for the police force.
NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has approved three of the requested measures.
- People will no longer be able to travel to their second property if that residence is outside a lockdown zone
- Additional AFD support
- Harsh restrictions placed on the singles bubble to allow police to determine if it is being misused
The singles bubble was recently created to make sure that singles had human contact after ‘stay at home’ orders condemned them to months of solitary confinement.
Enforcing Fuller’s demands will require increased use of ADF forces on the streets of Sydney. The legal framework for the ADF policing citizens is a hazy area of law, rarely tested. State premiers usually ask for their assistance during short-lived emergencies where they offer logistics assistance rather than acting as an extension of the police force.
“We know that a strong police presence and the Australian Defence Force supports on the ground is making a difference. We want to make sure we capture the handful of people … doing the wrong thing,” said Berejiklian.
Sydney, which has been living with ‘stay at home’ orders for nearly seven weeks, continues to report hundreds of new Covid cases every day.
The Delta variant has spread beyond Sydney and into the regions, with exposure sites announced in the Hunter, Newcastle, Dubbo, Tamworth, Bryon Bay, Shellharbour, and the Illawarra.
