Beginning today, unvaccinated residents over age 12 cannot leave their homes unless headed directly to work or purchasing essential items.
The lockdown is planned for at least 10 days and will not apply to those vaccinated against coronavirus or those who have recently recovered from it.
“In reality, we have told one-third of the population: You will not leave your apartment anymore apart from for certain reasons,” Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said Sunday. “That is a massive reduction in contacts between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated.”
This stems from Europe, despite all its authoritarian mandates, resuming its role as the epicenter of the global pandemic, prompting governments to reimpose unpopular lockdowns.
Austria has one of the continent’s highest infection rates, with a seven-day range of 815 cases per 100,000 people.
Interior Minister Karl Nehammer also warned that police will be checking people’s vaccination status. Anyone disobeying the lockdown can be fined up to €1,500 Euros, which is a hefty sum.
This sure makes me want to abide by Allison Schrager’s recent Bloomberg column, urging us to be more like those wonderful Europeans.
The lockdown effectively extends and increases the restrictions Austria introduced Nov. 5 that banned any unvaccinated citizen from visiting restaurants, hotels, theaters, and other public venues.
The heavy-handed edict affects about one-third of Austrians.
Of the roughly 9 million residents in Austria, approximately 6 million have received their first vaccine dose, while about 5.3 million residents are fully vaccinated, according to information from the World Health Organization.

‘Diversity, equity, inclusion; this has been the mantra of United Airlines. United pilots Stephanie and Kyle Atteberry thought the company meant it.
“United has been great to us,” Kyle, 45, told The Epoch Times. He recalls receiving blankets from the company as gifts when their six children were born. “Our expectations were, United would honor our faith.”
Kyle and wife Stephanie, 40, live in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Their jobs, flying Boeing 767 and 757 aircraft, routinely took them around the world until Oct. 1, the last day United allowed them to fly.
The couple is not getting the COVID-19 vaccine. They are among the 2,000 United employees who requested reasonable accommodations through medical or religious exemptions from the vaccine mandate. As an accommodation, United placed them on unpaid leave indefinitely. The 2,000 employees are part of Airline Employees 4 Health Freedom, a group legally challenging being placed on unpaid leave.
“They’ve already shown us what a reasonable accommodation looks like, because we’ve been doing it for a year and a half,” Kyle said. “Now they say I’m unsafe to come to work?”
While President Joe Biden announced in September mandatory vaccines for certain workers, United was already signaling in May that it was moving to a mandatory vaccine program.
In May, the company sent employees a letter with an incentive offer: pay for 13 hours of flight time, amounting to $2,600, for those who got vaccinated. And there was a penalty: those who did not get the shot would not be able to fly to as many international destinations. That means less work available for the unvaccinated. From there, the list of countries unvaccinated pilots could not fly to grew, until Germany was the only international place where the Atteberrys could fly.
Now they are both on unpaid leave.
“I feel betrayed by the airline that says it is all about love and respect, and yet here we are being sidelined. And seeing other airlines accommodating their employees—it’s frustrating,” Kyle said.
The stress of working through the situation has loomed over them for months.

Yes, now they want your children! ‘Australian children aged between five and 11 will likely be able to be vaccinated against Covid-19 from early next year.
The head of the country’s vaccine rollout, Lieutenant-General John Frewen, told Nine Newspapers the scheme to protect young children will ramp up in late January if the vaccine is approved by the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation and the Therapeutic Goods Administration.
The children’s Pfizer vaccine is slightly different compared to the one administered to those over 12. The vaccine has 10 micrograms in each shot, compared to 30 in the adult dose.
General Frewen told Nine Newspapers Australia had secured more than five million doses of the vaccine.
“We have already secured Pfizer five to 11 vials as part of our booster contract as a contingency if other vials were required. We have actually purchased sufficient supply for doses and boosters down to infants,” he said.
“While it is a matter for the TGA and ATAGI [to approve the jabs], once US data is available and approvals are given, this could be for commencement at the start of January but this will depend on the independent assessment processes.
“So when’s the earliest time this happens? ‘The Austrian government is meeting over the weekend with the intent of imposing a nationwide lockdown on unvaccinated citizens, and at least two provinces are slated to be under such orders starting Monday.
Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said Friday that he and regional leaders would get together on Sunday to discuss the plans, and that “The aim is very clear: that we give the green light this Sunday for a nationwide lockdown for the unvaccinated,” the Associated Press reported.
Regardless of whether the federal government approves the lockdown for the unvaccinated to apply to the entire country, unvaccinated residents in the provinces of Upper Austria and Salzburg will be under lockdown beginning Monday and will only be allowed to leave their homes for necessities such as buying groceries or going to doctor’s appointments.
Unvaccinated Austrians are already banned from going to events that have 25 or more attendees, and have also been prohibited from going to hairdressers or most restaurants under rules that went into effect this week.

‘A 17-year-old hospitalized with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) — a condition she developed after receiving a COVID vaccine — said she’s thankful she isn’t paralyzed and didn’t die.
Shelby Allen, who lives in Dyer County, Tennessee, said she started experiencing back pain and tingling in her arms a few weeks ago at a wedding. Her symptoms progressed until she found herself unable to feel her arms and legs while bowling with her school’s team.
“I’m on the bowling team in Dyer County, and I noticed when I was throwing the ball, I couldn’t feel my arm and legs,” Allen said. “So, I was freaking out.”
Her parents took her to a doctor in Jackson, Tennessee, where she was diagnosed with GBS. She was admitted to the ICU at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital for treatment.
“When we got in, my doctor … told me right off the bat what she thought it was. She said ‘you have Guillain-Barré,’” Allen said.
Dr. Nick Hysmith, the medical director of infection prevention at Le Bonheur, said GBS is where “the body’s immune system gets a little bit confused and targets your nerve cells, and that leads to weakness.”
He said the adverse reaction is “extremely rare” and advised people to still get vaccinated.
According to the Mayo Clinic, initial symptoms of GBS include weakness and tingling in the extremities. The symptoms can spread quickly, eventually paralyzing the whole body.
People with GBS usually experience their most significant weakness within two weeks after symptoms begin. Most GBS patients require hospitalization.
According to data from the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), there have been 22 reported cases of GBS in children 12 to 18 years old after they got a COVID vaccine, with 21 of those cases attributed to Pfizer’s vaccine.
Between Dec. 14, 2020, and Oct. 29, 2021, for all age groups, 1,591 cases of GBS were reported to VAERS by people who had recently been vaccinated for COVID.
Allen, who was moved out of the ICU at Le Bonheur, said she is determined to walk at her graduation.
“I should be able to walk and get my diploma in March,” Allen said. “I’ll be graduating high school. I should be able to walk on that stage and I’m determined to do that.”
Allen said she feels blessed. “I could be dead, or I could be paralyzed.”
As The Defender reported Nov. 5, Diane Ochoa, a 63-year-old cancer survivor from Georgia, was diagnosed with GBS and chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy after getting her second Pfizer shot.
In an exclusive interview, Ochoa said she is outraged after the vaccine injuries left her in “horrific pain,” unable to walk without assistance or provide for herself. Ochoa said she now suffers from injuries “far worse” than what she went through with her cancer treatment.
The Defender has also reported on a Texas teenager diagnosed with GBS a few weeks after his first dose of a COVID vaccine.
“I wanted to get the vaccine,” said Wyatt McGlaun, a high school senior. “I felt it was the right thing to do. I wanted to travel and enjoy my last summer before college.”
A few weeks after being vaccinated, McGlaun became weak and had difficulty walking. He was admitted to CHI St. Luke’s Health where he was diagnosed with GBS.
