Either this was the luckiest day of my life, or a day where stupidity seemed to be my natural state of mind. This particular day occurred sometime during September 1983. The Main Power transformer for Unit 1 had shut down because of an internal fault during an exceptionally hot day during the summer and was being replaced.

While the unit was offline, while I was on the labor crew, I was asked to help out the electricians who were doing an overhaul on the Precipitator. The Precipitator takes the ash out of the boiler exhaust before it goes up the smokestack. Without it, you would see thick smoke, instead, you see only clear exhaust. Things in the world have gotten ugly.

Stocks are crashing. Inflation and gasoline prices are soaring. Poor and fixed-income families face growing hardships. Putin’s barbaric war in Ukraine rages on. And violent criminals and illicit drugs stream into America along with millions of “undocumented immigrants.”

But amid these crises, Team Biden remains laser-focused — on manmade climate change.

Climate czar John Kerry worries that the Ukraine war will “distract” the world from global warming, a problem he conjures will create more refugees than ever before once the world’s “entire food production capacity has collapsed.”

Our energy and transportation secretaries are similarly upset by a hypothetical climate apocalypse. They insist people need to rush out and buy $55,000 electric cars and charge them up with expensive “renewable” energy to lower their carbon footprint and avert an imminent global warming catastrophe.

The only technologically feasible way to make renewables reliable at in the foreseeable future is with massive amounts of grid scale batteries. Whether this is even remotely feasible depends on the cost and here things get truly strange.

On the one hand we have real utility reports of the capital cost of these big battery arrays. Battery systems that have actually been built. On the other hand we have projected capital costs, which are being used to defend the growth of unreliable renewables.

The real costs and the projected costs are wildly different. So different that the projected costs have the aspect of fantasy.

Let’s start with the reality. The EIA collected annual utility data on the cost of grid scale battery arrays. Their most recent report is “Battery Storage in the United States: An Update on Market Trends — August 2021”.
