In the absence of mandates directing grid managers to take chaotic wind or solar power ahead of conventional power and/or massive subsidies directed to retailers encouraging them to take it and/or heavy fines imposed on them if they refuse to, there is simply no commercial market for power which can only be generated occasionally, in ideal wind conditions and/or when the sun is shining, on cloudless days.

Back in 1983 the American Wind Industry Association claimed that wind power would be “competitive and self-supporting on a national level by the end of the decade if assisted by tax credits and augmented by federally sponsored R&D”. That was 36 years ago. And there was no lack of assistance in the form of tax credits and federally sponsored R&D, along with a whole bunch of other punitive mandates and targets designed to cripple conventional generators and favour chaotically intermittent wind power.

The Virginia wind-versus-whales story has taken a turn for the worse. Worse for the severely endangered Right Whales that is. My research has found what may be some really bad news.

Meet Tethys. Not the real Tethys, the mythical Greek titaness of the sea, but DOE’s center for reporting research on the environmental impact of energy technology on sea life, including whales. This is the science side of DOE (where I used to work), not the Ocean Energy development side.

With the House January 6 committee hearings over for now, New York Times’ reporter Jeremy Peters unloaded on a familiar target in Monday’s Business section — the conservative press — in “As Jan. 6 Panel’s Evidence Piled Up, Conservative Media Doubled Down.”

In the absence of massive subsidies, there would be no wind or solar ‘industries’, so-called. So, it should come as no surprise that the jobs “created” in association with those industries are an easy come, easy go, kind of affair.

The promise of thousands of jobs building wind turbines and solar panels is a renewable energy rent-seeker mantra; there are – but only in China. China itself is building nuclear power plants and hundreds more coal-fired power plants, as if its economic livelihood depends on it.

Meanwhile, in those Western countries foolish enough to attempt to run on sunshine and breezes, those few jobs that did materialise are fast disappearing, and the promise of a pot of gold at the end of the RE rainbow appears to be equally empty, as the team from Jo Nova report.
