Consider other consequences of decarbonization.

All current production of fossil fuels would have to be phased out. The fuel-producing jurisdictions and countries, faced with economic disaster, might “push back” a bit. Further, as the imposition of regulatory restraints on fossil fuel consumption would undoubtedly cause the price of existing production to decline sharply, governments would have to centrally plan (i.e. totally control) virtually all parts of the energy economies in all the countries of the world.

It would be necessary to replace most of the world’s existing industrial and transportation infrastructure that now depends on fossil fuels; the costs of this would be in the many trillions of dollars.

Without crude oil, the world’s 50,000 merchant ships and 50,000 jets that are needed to keep the eight billion in this world healthy, would be grounded.

As those who write frequently on climate policy issues, we are often asked, “What will decarbonization cost?”. Decarbonization is the term used to refer to effectively eliminating emissions of greenhouse gases, usually measured in terms of carbon dioxide equivalent, allegedly to stop human-caused global warming. In practical terms, that means ending use of hydrocarbons (oil, natural gas, and coal), and the energy services provided by them. According to the agreement reached at the United Nations COP25 conference in Paris in 2015, the goal is to achieve decarbonization by 2050.

Looking back less than 200 years, we had a decarbonized society with no coal fired power plants, no natural gas power plants, and the Beverly Hillbillies had not yet discovered oil. Remember Barack Obama’s big stimulus bill that “Sheriff Joe” was in charge of? That didn’t work out so well.

The failure to advance nuclear power in this country to replace coal-fired plants being driven out of business by massive subsidies to wind and solar beggars belief. Everyone with half a brain is alive to the fact that chaotically intermittent and heavily subsidised wind and solar are responsible for Australia’s power pricing and supply calamity

Australian households and businesses are already feeling the pinch; retail power prices have rocketed, with much worse to come; energy hungry businesses are simply cut from the grid when the sun sets and special calm weather sets in.

And yet, Labor’s gormless Energy Minister, Chris Bowen pretends that the panacea to the renewables-driven disaster is more of the same. George Orwell would struggle to keep a straight face laying out the kind of political narrative being run by Bowen and his fellow travellers.
