Since its inception as an independent country in 1956, it has seen, according to The Wall Street Journal, “17 attempted coups (six successful), two civil wars and a genocidal conflict in Darfur.” And yet, as with Egypt, Libya, Afghanistan, and other colossal failures to establish a friendly democracy, the U.S. also tried and has now failed in Sudan.
From a larger geopolitical standpoint, Sudan is a resource-rich country and has attracted the attention of America’s bitter enemies. Russia looks to Sudan and other African countries to employ its mercenaries. China and many Middle Eastern countries are looking to cash in on Sudan’s oil and mineral reserves.
