‘President-elect Joe Biden has celebrated news from pharmaceutical company Pfizer – who claimed its coronavirus vaccine was proven 90 per cent effective during trials – but warned there was still a long path ahead to recovery. The company reported people taking part in the trial were not experiencing any side effects, and as many as 20 million doses of the drug could be rolled out by the end of the year. Mr Biden, while announcing his COVID-19 taskforce, said even if the vaccine was proven to be effective and safe, it would not be widely available for months to come. “The process must also be grounded in science and fully transparent so the American people can have every confidence in any true vaccine is safe and effective,” he said. “The challenge before us right now is still immense and growing.” President Donald Trump also spruiked Pfizer’s news, tweeting the stock market was “up big” and the vaccine would be coming soon. Mr Trump announced he had begun his post-election purge with the sacking of Defence Secretary Mark Esper. The move follows reports relations between the pair were strained, in part due to a dispute as to how to handle the riots spreading across America earlier in the year.
